OPTI and Nexen are applying resources, innovation and cooperation to develop the Long Lake Project and ensure that associated economic benefits take practical, relevant and sustainable shape in neighbouring communities. Our community investments fall into five categories:- Education & Training
- We support literacy, math and band programs for the Anzac Community School
- The Long Lake Project also participates in an on-site apprenticeship program, only the second of its kind in the province. The program allows apprentices to take their in-class training on the job site, rather than having to leave home and work for eight weeks to attend school elsewhere. OPTI, Nexen and our contractors benefit from this work on-site and all Canadians benefit from an expanded workforce of skilled tradespeople
- Community Development
- Our preference is to hire qualified candidates who reside within the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo, a strategy that has resulted in many local people working in a variety of roles on the Project
- Local businesses benefit from our approach of working internally to identify and communicate potential opportunities. This way, we utilize local businesses while helping to create local capacity and build self-sufficiency
- The Long Lake Project creates and donates a Community Calendar to raise funds for the Anzac Li’l Lakers parent/child group
- We support various Aboriginal youth and community program
- Environment
- Some of our initiatives include: monitoring air quality, protecting ground water, addressing Greenhouse gas emissions, and understanding biodiversity
- Health & Wellness
- We sponsor a Community Outreach Vehicle that enables health care providers to provide basic health services to rural areas surrounding Fort McMurray
- We support of the Fort McMurray Food Bank and area United Way campaigns
- Culture, Arts & Recreation
- We believe that arts, cultural and recreational activities are an important part of a healthy community
- We are sponsors of Anzac's newly formed children's soccer league
- We support various school, First Nations and community association activities
As we move forward with Long Lake and future developments, we will continue to actively communicate and work with local individuals and organizations.
